In this study, I investigate the unique use of Arabic metaphors in online communication. In such contexts, metaphors are often conveyed through semantic and symbolic phrases, with opinions frequently reduced to a single keyword. This concise expression suits the fast-paced nature of online interactions, where metaphorical language is commonly used to share viewpoints. As metaphor usage increases online, deeper interpretation becomes essential to uncover the sentiments behind these expressions. To explore this, I compiled the Arabic Online Metaphor Corpus (AMC), a foundational step in evaluating the impact of metaphors on sentiment. My research focuses on how Arabic online metaphors influence...
Metaphor is an inseparable part of communication in Arabic language. Over the past years, Arabic metaphors have been increasingly used in online communication, which has drawn attention of researchers. Arabic metaphors in online context have been evolving and show distinct features, reflecting the need for speedy online communication compared to traditional written forms. While Arabic metaphors have intrinsic ambiguity of word sense, the metaphors used online present an even higher challenges for accurate interpretation of their true meanings in their contexts. For example, no reliable resources can be found for online variants of Arabic metaphors for interpretation, newly emerging metaphor...
n this paper, I discuss the testing of the Arabic Metaphor Corpus (AMC) [1] using newly designed automatic tools for sentiment classification for AMC based on semantic tags. The tool incorporates semantic emotional tags for sentiment classification. I evaluate the tool using standard methods, which are F-score, recall, and precision. The method is to show the impact of Arabic online metaphors on sentiment through the newly designed tools. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to conduct sentiment classification for Arabic metaphors using semantic tags to find the impact of the metaphor. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2504.19590?
Over the recent years, Arabic language resources and NLP tools have been under rapid development. One of the important tasks for Arabic natural language processing is the sentiment analysis. While a significant improvement has been achieved in this research area, the existing computational models and tools still suffer from the lack of capability of dealing with Arabic metaphorical expressions. Metaphor has an important role in Arabic language due to its unique history and culture. Metaphors provide a linguistic mechanism for expressing ideas and notions that can be different from their surface form. Therefore, in order to efficiently identify true sentiment of Arabic language data, a...
